“From Portrait to Narrative”
How to make your portraits “speak” to the viewer? How to tell a story with a single image? And how to create a series where portraits as well as other images are all interconnected and support each other in a single narrative?

In this workshop, students will learn about various approaches to contemporary portraiture and the possibility of crossing boundaries between documentary and fiction while creating a narrative series. Through open discussions, readings, slide presentations as well as in-class demonstration and home assignments students will learn useful techniques in managing lighting and creating an atmosphere using minimal equipment as well as non-professional lights available at subject’s home/environment.  An overview of the basic principles of color use in art, and understanding of color as a visual tool as well as editing images into a consistent and concise project with a clear narrative and a distinctive stylistic approach will all be part of this workshop.
